Since June 2015 when we started this website, Delonghi’s Magnifica has been a staple in the top machines bought by our readers. There’s a very good reason for that, it offers incredible value and makes great coffee.
As we made clear in our ESAM 4200 review, it’s not the best coffee machine out there, Delonghi themselves have a higher quality machines in their Eletta models, but you do have to pay a higher price for that increase in quality.
Where the ESAM4200 Magnifica machine therefore excels, is the combination of low price tag (low for a bean to cup machine at least!), combined with the capability to make a great cup of coffee.
At the time of writing, five years on, some of those machines are beginning to fail, and we sometimes get asked about whether it’s better to buy a new machine or attempt to get it repaired and fix any lingering faults and problems.
Replace Or Repair A Magnifica Coffee Machine?
The best place to start is to consider whether you’re happy with your Magnifica (when it’s working). If you are, then either a replacement or repair of the fault are worth considering. On the other hand, if you’re thinking you might like to upgrade to a better machine, then now is the obvious time.
Take a look at our recommended models on the homepage or our current best deals page to see if anything takes your fancy, and after that if you’re still not sure, there’s an entire archive of reviews at your disposal.
If it helps to know what other people tend to be drawn to that read our website, the three top choices that are a step up from the Magnifica tend to be Melitta’s Caffeo Barista TS, the Sage Barista Express (Sage is known as Breville in some countries) and of course the ever popular Delonghi Eletta.
Replacing like for like is a great option if you’ve had your Magnifica machine for some time, still love using it and enjoy the coffee it creates. That’s especially true if you can see yourself sticking with it for several years to come.
Right now, here’s a quick way to see the current Amazon Price for a new machine:
The reason I say that is repairs can be cheaper in the short term, but over time, an older machine is likely to develop more faults than a newer one. That might mean you either need to replace the whole machine a few weeks or months after paying for a repair and replacement parts, or continue to foot the repair bill which can soon start to feel like throwing good money after bad.
There is, of course, no absolute answer here, and the most obvious reason why you might opt to repair your machine with spares is if money is tight and you just need to get your morning coffee fix again as soon as possible. After all, it’s a lot cheaper to fix or replace a machine than buying a coffee every day in Starbucks instead!
Replacement Parts
Many parts in the Magnifica range are simple to replace, and others are possible if you know what you’re doing. As a responsible website, we don’t advise trying your luck with anything electronic.
The moment you have to start unscrewing parts and take the machine to bits, you’re heading into non user serviceable parts territory. If you’re confident and competent and have the required diagram then that’s fine, but if you’re not, we strongly advise against it.
With that said, let’s look at some common spare parts for the Delonghi ESAM4200.
Water Tank (7313228241)
One of the more common elements to get damaged is the water tank. You’ll have been regularly removing it from the machine, and placing it into the sink to refill, before sliding it back into the Magnifica. If you’re anything like us, from time to time that might mean being a little heavy handed while you’re thinking about other things, which can result in cracks or other marks appearing in the plastic.
As the tank is responsible for holding nearly two litres of water, it’s best to replace as soon as possible before the problem gets worse – a full tank of water has the potential to go a long way, especially if it seeps out while you’re not around!
The great news is a replacement is easy to get hold of – check out the current Amazon prices for the Delonghi 7313228241 water tank for your coffee machine:

De’Longhi Infuser Brewing Unit (5513227871)
You’ll need to be a bit more familiar with the innards of your coffee machine if you find yourself needing to replace the infuser, aka the brewing unit. It’s certainly not difficult though, as you can see in the following video from Delonghi:
Don’t worry about the model in the video being different to your Magnifica, the process will be the same. We used this one as it’s more ‘official’ than many other YouTube videos, as it’s made by Delonghi themselves. It’s also a good reminder how to clean the infuser, something that many of us either don’t know we can or should do, or forget about!
To replace the infuser, you’d just need to replace the brewing unit with a like for like swap, which you can find on Amazon here:

Descaling Solution
We’ve already covered how to descale your Magnifica ESAM42000 coffee machine on the site in a previous article, and also how to get your hands on the ‘official’ Delonghi descaling liquid as part of our wider look at descalers, so rather than rehash all of that here, you can read that post with detail on Delonghi EcoDecalk.
Water Filters
The final common item you’re likely to want to replace is the water filter (if you use one). They’ll help you to keep the machine clear of gunk building up that comes in the water, so in some areas it’s more important to use them in others. For example, hard water areas or those with significant limescale content are particularly important.
You’ll find the filters on Amazon, below are the common ones. We recommend you to use the ones produced by Delonghi themselves, especially if you’re still inside your warranty period. You can often save money by buying a multi-pack, but prices do vary so it’s best to check both options.
